Chapter 7

Ariella’s pulse raced, and her heart was hammering inside her chest. She couldn’t believe her own mother and sisters had talked her into accepting Brock’s insane proposal.

If only it was a proposal, her Lioness lamented, sad meow.

The idiotic she-Cat wanted to use the upcoming night as an excuse to claim her mate, but Ariella had absolutely shut that plan down. Either Brock didn’t know she was his mate or he didn’t care.

Either way, she must be wrong about them. Wouldn’t her fated mate know who she was and want her above all others? She felt a pang of sadness at the thought that he could simply leave her after a night. It was almost worth her calling off the whole thing.

But her she-Cat couldn’t stand the idea of any other male getting near her, and this might be her only chance to experience carnal bliss. Winning the contest with Serious Moonlight’s contract might provide a balm of sorts for the future, she reasoned even though the prospect of trading sex for his signature left a bad taste in her mouth.

Ariella didn’t want to die a spinster. Not like her poor Aunt Alicia who had died last year and had never found a man to look beyond her ample ass, or so her mother said whenever her unfortunate sister’s name was brought up.

Maybe this was her shot to change his mind?

“Easy girl,” Patricia Golden grunted as she zipped up the scarlet red gown Ariella had bought on impulse months ago, but never had the nerve to wear, “that puppy doggy of yours is gonna flip his lid when he sees you in this!”

“Hell, yeah, you look all juicy and red like a Fruit Rollup!” Adrianna giggled.

Ariella looked down at herself and groaned. The ensemble was super tight and so over the top she couldn’t imagine why she had bought it in the first place! Ugh, but it been love at first sight and she’d put it on her credit card and kept it tucked away in her closet. Even the months she’d spent paying off the ridiculous thing would prove worth it if Brock fell head over heels for her after tonight.

“Are you sure I should wear this one?”

“Am I sure? This little number practically screams ‘deflower me’! You just listen to your mother, and you will bag yourself a puppy tonight! Just remember honey, we she-Cats mark in two ways, with teeth and claw. You just scratch him, and that doggy is all yours. Get ‘em!” her mother slapped her on her butt and spun her around to face the mirror.

“Mom!” she moaned.

“Mom’s wight, Awi,” Annabeth said with a mouthful of snacks, “you wook gweat!”

Her sister’s exuberance for her outfit was followed by some serious nom nom noming. Good thing Ariella spoke fluent Lioness-with-mouth-full. She rolled her eyes and covered her face with her hands.

This whole thing was borderline insane. Ariella’s shock when Brock had made his indecent, and yet exciting proposal had basically caused her brain to shut down.
